Recovery @ EGM

Bridge to Life Recovery is an integrated part of the life and fabric of EverGreen Ministries. We not only seek to bring hope to the lives of God’s children, but to influence the church with the spirituality of recovery.

If you or someone you love needs help we invite you to join us. Bridge to Life is a place where you can begin to recover and heal from destructive addictions, relationships, and feelings. Our 12 Step meetings are safe places in the church where you will find people who understand and care. People who are experiencing grief and depression find hope in our meetings as well.

In reaching out to hurting people we seek to be a bridge between two communities that should be friends. Our desire is to be a place where people with open minds can explore the power of 12 Step recovery and faith in Christ. Bridge to Life is not endorsed by AA/NA or Al-Anon. We do consider ourselves a friend of these groups and we see participation in them as essential to personal recovery.

Bridge to Life meetings are open and follow a basic 12 Step format with use of the Bible, AA Big Book, and other recovery oriented literature. Persons are free to talk about their faith as it relates to their recovery. You are welcome at our meetings no matter what you believe. Attendance at all meetings is confidential.

Bridge To Life

History

Is a primary, chronic disease with genetic, spiritual, psychosocial, and environmental factors influencing its development and manifestations. The disease is often progressive and fatal. It is characterized by continuous or periodic: impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortions in thinking, most notably denial.

When AA was founded by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith a new day dawned in the treatment of Alcoholism. Many historians consider AA to be the most significant spiritual development of the last century. Any fair reading of AA history will reveal the solid biblical roots of the 12 Steps.

Over the years many churches have graciously allowed AA and other 12 Step programs to use their facilities. This has been a welcome development, but often it has left the church without embracing or enfolding recovery ministry into the life of the local congregation.

Other churches have looked more skeptically at AA because of its openness to people of all faiths. Well meaning Christians have also believed that only the church can offer the kind of healing needed for recovery. This approach has proven to be remarkably unhelpful and harmful to many suffering from addiction. An incredible opportunity for ministry and evangelism is often missed and the work of recovery left for those more willing to listen and learn.

To add to the problems facing recovery ministry there exist a remarkable disconnect in treatment and care for people who are suffering from addiction:

1. Clergy as a whole lack sufficient training in addiction to understand the need for treatment and support groups.
2. Social workers often lack sufficient understanding and confidence in the power of religion to heal and give hope to recovering people.

In reaching out to hurting people we seek to be a bridge between two communities that should be friends. Our desire is to be a safe place where people with open minds can explore the power of 12 Step recovery and faith in Christ. Bridge to Life is not endorsed by AA/NA or Al-Anon. We do consider ourselves a friend of these groups and we see participation in them as essential to personal recovery. We love Gods Book, enjoy the love of Christ, and know He is with us on our journey.

Bridge to Life meetings are open and follow a basic 12 Step format with use of the Bible, AA Big Book, and other recovery oriented literature. Persons are free to talk about their faith as it relates to their recovery. Friends are welcome at our meetings no matter what they believe. Attendance at all meetings is confidential.

Assessing Problems with Drugs or Alcohol

1. Have you ever decided to stop drinking/using for a week or so, but lasted only for a couple of days?
2. Do you wish people would mind their own business about your drinking/using – stop telling you what to do?
3. Have you ever switched from one kind of drink or drug to another in the hope that this would keep you from getting drunk or high?
4. Have you had to have an eye-opener (one or more drinks) upon awakening during the past year?
5. Do you envy people who can drink/use without getting into trouble?
6. Have you had problem connected with drinking/using during the past year?
7. Has your drinking/using caused trouble at home?
8. Do you ever try to get “extra” drinks/drugs at a party because you do not get enough?
9. Do you tell yourself you can stop drinking/using any time you want to, even though you keep getting drunk/high when you don’t mean to?
10. Have you missed days of work or school because of drinking/using? Many of us admit now that we “called in sick” lots of times when the truth was that we were hung-over, drunk, or high.
11. Do you have “blackouts”? This means not being able to remember conversations, appointments and other details after drinking or using.
12. Have you ever felt that your life would be better if you did not drink/use?
